The key

The market doesn’t want real artists

The market wants a signature

The market wants you to have a brand

You’re not a brand

You’re a human being

There’s nothing the market abhors more than your freedom

As an artist today it’s actually a detriment if you have a multiplicity of ideas

You hear that? As a creative person you’ll get punished for having ideas

Your life will be easy if you just have or steal just one idea your whole life

So most successful artists have just one idea

Then there’s people like gerhard richter or Philip guston who have two ideas in their whole life

And we say “Wow! He does two things”

Two things? Two fucking things?

What a joke

If you have just one idea you have a career

“my job is squiggles”

“My idea is cactus”

You have to simplify yourself so radically, tell such a simple story but it’s easy for people to digest in just one or two seconds

So artists compromise themselves

Fellating the audience, fellating the algorithm, fellating the market

Fellating everything except the one thing that really matters

YOUR self

YOUR instincts

You are holding the key

The trick is seeing it

Feeling it

Growing into it

As artists we should be asking

what do I like?

What excites me? What am I attracted to, or what’s attracting me?

SOMATIC COMPASS
